South Lakeland is part of a glorious outdoor playground, a landscape where you can't help but get out and enjoy. With miles of quiet lanes, hills and dales, woodlands, rivers and coastline, it's the perfect environment for everyone to find their own adventure to get the pulse racing or relaxing activity to help them unwind.
The Lake District is the Adventure Capital of the UK, where everyone from seasoned ramblers to family dabblers or adrenalin junkies can find the activities that will help them get the very best from the great outdoors. Try it alone or with an experienced guide, there's no excuse not to get out and give it a go!
We boast a huge variety of sports played in a competitive but friendly spirit, including athletics, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rugby league, rugby union and tennis. Whether it be playing football at the foot of Kendal Castle, or playing cricket with the backdrop of the dramatic Coniston fells, it's hard to think of a more picturesque location to play sport!
If you prefer your sports and activities to be played indoors, both Kendal and Ulverston have excellent leisure facilities including racquet sports, gyms and swimming pools. In addition, many hotels throughout South Lakeland have their own (or shared use of) leisure facilities with membership also open to the general public.
Join your nearest sports clubs and participate against others in local competitive leagues. Adults can compete at senior levels; while a wealth of junior leagues offer opportunities for young people to be involved in physical activity. Whatever your sport and experience, you can find great courses and clubs to suit you through Active Cumbria. To find out more about giving sports a go, or about funding sport in the community, see the Sport England website.
