Green and Environmental Initiatives

Living and working in South Lakeland comes with responsibility – we all need to manage our carbon footprint and look after our environment. The National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty are obvious areas for consideration, but the impact of business operations on our region and the wider world is one which we take seriously.

Green Opportunities for Businesses

South Lakeland District Council is part of Cumbria Business Environment Network (CBEN), an organisation which delivers environmental management solutions from initial concept and implementation of systems through to independent auditing and certification. CBEN is a project delivered by Cumbria Rural Enterprise Agency.

It also helps with other commercial services including Carbon Footprinting, Transport Planning, Resource Efficiency, Environmental Advice, Energy Monitoring and Legislation Compliance.

Love your Lakes

Love Your Lakes aims to improve water quality in Lake Windermere and the surrounding catchment. We're helping businesses, residents and visitors to take simple lake friendly steps to reduce the occurrence of harmful blue green algae. You can do your bit to reduce the amount of phosphates getting into the lakes by simply choosing phosphate free dishwashing products.

Nurture Lakeland

Nurture Lakeland works with visitors and tourism related businesses to fundraise for local conservation projects and to promote environmentally sustainable tourism practices. Nuture Lakeland encourages businesses to adopt the Visitor Payback Scheme, to directly link visitors with the conservation of the area they have come to enjoy.

Nurture Lakeland is a key partner in sustainable tourism and is working to ensure that the environment and human activity co-exist harmoniously through the different areas of the Lake District National Park.
